After graduating from Punahou School, he received his undergraduate degree at Santa Clara University and then attended the University of California, San Francisco dental school. He graduated with a Doctor of Dental Science in 1990 and then spent a year in a general practice residency at the St .Francis Medical Center in Honolulu. After his residency he worked for St. Francis Healthcare Systems as their Dental Director before starting his own private practice in 1999.
